3. Metallurgy. A relatively soft allotropic form of pure iron which has a body-centred cubic crystal structure and is the stable form of iron below 910°C (more fully alpha ferrite) and above approx. 1400°C (more fully delta ferrite). Also: a component of steel consisting of this form of iron containing a small proportion of carbon in solid solution.Alpha and delta ferrite are also called alpha iron and delta iron respectively.Between the above temperatures the stable form of iron is the face-centred cubic allotrope austenite (= gamma iron n. at gamma adj. 2a).
