Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Probably also partly formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: Latin Amalecites ; Amalek n., -ite suffix1.
Etymology: Originally (i) < post-classical Latin Amalecites, Amalechites (Vetus Latina, Vulgate) < Hellenistic Greek Ἀμαληκίτης < Ἀμαλήκ Amalek n. + -ίτης -ite suffix1, after biblical Hebrew ʿamālēqī (adjective) of or relating to the Amalek people, (noun) the Amalek people collectively. In later use probably directly (ii) < Amalek n. + -ite suffix1.Compare Old English Amalechitisc of or relating to the Amalekites (in an isolated attestation; < post-classical Latin Amalechites + -ish suffix1).

A member of a nomadic people inhabiting the area south of Canaan in Biblical times. Also figurative: a fierce or determined adversary. Cf. Amalek n.The Amalekites are described as living during the period covered by the books of Exodus and 1 and 2 Samuel; they were noted for being fierce fighters and for their conflicts with the Israelites, and in rabbinic tradition were regarded as the archetypal enemies of the Jews.
