Etymology: < South African Dutch roode els (Afrikaans rooiels ), transferred use of Dutch roode els alder (literally ‘red alder’; so named on account of its reddish wood) < roode (see rooibok n. and discussion at that entry) + els (see alder n.¹). In β. forms directly < Afrikaans rooiels. With the transfer of the name from the European alder to the southern African tree, compare similar uses in compounds cited at alder n.¹ 3. Compare red alder n., red els n. at red adj. and n. Compounds 1e(d).The forms rood elze, roode elze probably reflect Dutch inflected forms in elz- (compare elzen-, in compounds such as Dutch elzenhout alder-wood).
