Etymology: < South African Dutch roodebok, (in late sources) rooibok (Afrikaans rooibok) < Dutch roode , attributive form of rood red adj. + bok buck n.1 Compare red-buck n. at red adj. and n. Compounds 1e(a).Afrikaans rooi is < Dutch roode (see above), with vocalization of the medial -d- and loss of the unstressed final vowel. Both of these processes are already found in 19th-cent. South African Dutch sources (compare e.g. quot. 1866 and quot. 1835 at rooikat n.). An intermediate stage is reflected in the form rooyebok , which shows vocalization of medial -d- in the South African Dutch etymon, the process which eventually resulted in the modern standard form rooi of the Afrikaans word for ‘red’. In β. forms with the second element remodelled after buck n.1
