Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Dutch. Partly a borrowing from Afrikaans. Etymons: Dutch roodebekje, rooibekkie; Afrikaans rooibekkie.
Etymology: < South African Dutch roodebekje, roodbeckje, (in late sources) rooibekkie (1685; Afrikaans rooibekkie ) < Dutch roode (see rooibok n. and discussion at that entry) + bekje little beak (1636; < bek beak n.1 + -je , suffix forming diminutives). In β. forms directly < Afrikaans rooibekkie. Compare later rooibek n.The passage translated in quot. 1793 shows the South African Dutch word in a Swedish context.

Either of two finch-like songbirds with red bills, the common or St Helena waxbill, Estrilda astrild (family Estrildidae), and (more fully king rooibekkie) the pin-tailed whydah, Vidua macroura (family Ploceidae).Cf. red-beak n. at red adj. and n. Compounds 1f(b)(ii), rooibek n.
