Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: down- prefix, washed adj.
Etymology: < down- prefix + washed adj., after to wash down (see wash v. 15a). Compare earlier downwash n. 1.
Designating soil, sand, etc., that has been carried downstream by water.

1959 Trans. Inst. Brit. Geographers No. 26 58 No sharp distinction can be made between the deeper soils of the rendzina type, containing abundant downwashed red clay, and the soils developed on the shallower deposits of Clay-with-flints.
