Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymons: Greek ὠχρο-, ὤχρα.
Etymology: < ancient Greek ὠχρο-, combining form (in e.g. ὠχρόμματος pale-eyed) of ὤχρα, ὠχρός (see ochre n.). Compare scientific Latin ochro- (formations in which are found from at least the 18th cent., in e.g. ochroleucus , ochroleuca : see ochroleucous adj. ), French ochro- (formations in which are found from at least the 19th cent., in e.g. ochropyre : see ochropyra n. ).Attested in a small number of English formations from the early 19th cent. (see below).
Now rare.
Forming terms in which ochro- denotes a light yellow or ochreous colour.
ochrocarpious adj. [ < ochro- comb. form + -carpous comb. form, with (apparently arbitrary) insertion of -i-; compare scientific Latin ochrocarpus (1804, A. A. Dupetit-Thouars)] Botany Obsolete having yellow fruit or fruiting bodies.
