Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin crystallum , -in suffix1.
Etymology: < classical Latin crystallum crystal n. + -in suffix1. In sense 1 after German Crystallin (O. Unverdorben 1826, in Ann. der Physik 84 397); so called because it forms crystalline salts. In sense 2 after German Krystallin ( J. F. Simon Handb. der angewandte med. Chem. (1840) I. 192).
