单词 alimon
释义

alimonn.

Origin: Apparently a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin alimon, halimon.
Etymology: Apparently < classical Latin alimon, variant (e.g. in manuscripts of Pliny) of halimon < ancient Greek ἅλιμον (also ἄλιμον ) saltbush, Atriplex halimus, use as noun (short for ϕυτὸν ἅλιμον maritime plant) of neuter of ἅλιμος maritime (see halimous adj.). Confused by early herbalists with post-classical Latin alimos plant said to dispel hunger (3rd or 4th cent.; also a636 in Isidore) < ancient Greek ἄλιμος ‘banishing hunger,’ designating a food said to be prepared from asphodel and mallows < ἀ- a- prefix6 + λιμός hunger (see limotherapy n.).In post-classical Latin alimus is found as a variant of halimon saltbush, e.g. in the Latin version of Dioscorides (6th cent.); compare Hellenistic Greek ἅλιμος (masculine), variant of ἅλιμον in the same sense; this may have contributed to the confusion of the words.
Obsolete. rare.
A plant supposed to dispel hunger, sometimes identified with the saltbush, Atriplex halimus, a drought tolerant plant found in arid regions of the Mediterranean and North Africa.
