Etymology: Probably < botany n. + -ism suffix.Compare the following earlier example of the form botanismos in sense ‘weeding’, which shows an apparently isolated borrowing < Middle French botanismos (1566 in the passage translated; < classical Latin botanismus weeding (Pliny) < Hellenistic Greek βοτανισμός weeding < βοτανίζειν botanize v. + -ισμός -ism suffix):1601 P. Holland tr. Pliny Hist. World I. xviii. xviii. 577 Some few there be that afterwards fall to weeding, which point of husbandrie they call Botanismos [Fr. Botanismos].
