Origin: A borrowing from Italian. Etymon: Italian bottana.
Etymology: < Italian †bottana coarse linen cloth (1561) < Egyptian Arabic buṭāna (see bustian n.).Compare Catalan †botana blanket (1329), which probably derives from the same Arabic word. On the final vowel of the English word compare discussion at -ade suffix and -ado suffix.
Obsolete.
A piece of coarse linen cloth, often dyed blue. Usually in plural.
