Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Amorpha.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Amorpha, genus name ( Linnaeus Corollarium generum plantarum (1737) 16) < ancient Greek ἄμορϕος shapeless (see amorphous adj.) + scientific Latin -a -a suffix2, so called because the flowers have only one petal (compare quot. 1866).
Botany.
Any of several leguminous North American shrubs of the genus Amorpha, having long spiked clusters of purple flowers and hairy pinnate leaves. Also (in form Amorpha): the genus itself. Valid publication of the genus name: Linnaeus Species plantarum II. (1753) 713.Certain species of Amorpha are also called bastard indigo, false indigo.

Etymology: < ancient Greek ἄμορϕα, use as noun of neuter plural of ἄμορϕος shapeless (see amorphous adj.), after French amorphes, plural (H. M. D. de Blainville, 1822, or earlier); compare scientific Latin -a -a suffix2. Compare slightly earlier Amorphozoa n.
Zoology. Obsolete. rare.
With plural agreement. A group comprising animals lacking a definite, regular form; such animals collectively. Cf. Amorphozoa n.
