chevereln.2

Origin: Perhaps a borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin cheverillus.
Etymology: Perhaps < post-classical Latin cheverillus (1231 in a British source), glossed as ‘young cock’ in a 1727 ed. of John Cowell's Interpreter, a gloss apparently arising from the word's occurrence close to classical Latin gallīna hen (see gallinaceous adj.), but perhaps rather to be regarded as an example of cheverellus cheverel n.1
? Obsolete.
