Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French rhénan.
Etymology: < French rhénan (A. Dumont 1848, in Bull. de l'Acad. Royale de Belgique 15 684), specific use of rhénan Rhenish (1808) < classical Latin Rhēnānus of or originating from the Rhine < Rhēnus , the name of the River Rhine (see Rhine n.1) + -ānus -an suffix.For an earlier example of the French form in an English context, compare:1851 Jrnl. Geol. Soc. Dublin 4 51 M. Dumont now enters on the consideration of the ‘terrain rhenan’, which he considers the equivalent of the Devonian system of English authors.
