Designating an English translation of the New Testament made by Roman Catholics of the English College at Rheims in 1582, based closely on the Vulgate text. Also: designating the translators themselves (rare).The College was associated with the University of Douai (see Douai n.), but removed temporarily to Rheims between 1578 and 1593. The principal translator was Gregory Martin, under the supervision of William Allen and Richard Bristow.
