释义

chin chinint.n.1

Brit. /ˌtʃɪn ˈtʃɪn/, U.S. /ˌtʃɪn ˈtʃɪn/
Forms: 1600s– chin chin, 1800s– tchin tchin.
Origin: A borrowing from Chinese. Etymon: Chinese qǐnɡ.
Etymology: < Chinese (Cantonese) ching, (Mandarin) qǐnɡ please (as an expression of polite deference, often repeated: see note), specific use of qǐnɡ to ask, to invite. The Chinese word is used in a range of situations, e.g. as part of an invitation to do something, or when giving way to each other (compare quot. 1800 at sense A. 1). It is typically used at the beginning of a statement and often repeated for emphasis, in Cantonese use typically without a pause. The use as a toast (see sense A. 2) is not directly paralleled in Chinese, but may have arisen from the use of the more general Chinese word to introduce an invitation to drink (perhaps compare quot. 1625 at sense A. 1).
