Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element; modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: Greek καρκίνος , -logy comb. form.
Etymology: < ancient Greek καρκίνος crab, sore or ulcer, cancer (see carcinoma n.) + -logy comb. form, after French carcinologie (1834 or earlier in sense 1, 1950 or earlier in sense 2). Compare slightly earlier carcinological adj.With sense 2 compare earlier cancerology n. and oncology n. With carcinologist n. at Derivatives compare French carcinologue (1842).
