Etymology: < adventure n. + -ism suffix. Compare adventurist n. and later adventurist adj.In quot. 1918 and ultimately in some other uses in sense 1b after Russian avantjurizm (1903 or earlier in this sense; 1857 or earlier in sense ‘proneness to take risks, engage in unscrupulous fortune-seeking’; compare French aventurisme behaviour characteristic of an adventurer (1886 or earlier)).
