Etymology: < scientific Latin Afrormosia, former genus name (H. Harms in A. Engler & K. Prantl Die natürlichen Pflanzenfamilien (1906) Suppl. III. 158) < Afro- Afro- comb. form + scientific Latin Ormosia , genus name (1811; < ancient Greek ὅρμος necklace (see hormogone n.) + scientific Latin -ia -ia suffix¹; so called because the seeds of the plant are used as beads for necklaces).

Either of two North and West African hardwood trees of the genus Pericopsis (formerly Afrormosia) (family Fabaceae ( Leguminosae)), P. elata and P. laxiflora, valued for their durable, heavy, fine-textured timber. Also: the timber itself, used esp. for furniture and flooring, and formerly for shipbuilding.
