Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Afrormosia.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Afrormosia, former genus name (H. Harms in A. Engler & K. Prantl Die natürlichen Pflanzenfamilien (1906) Suppl. III. 158) < Afro- Afro- comb. form + scientific Latin Ormosia , genus name (1811; < ancient Greek ὅρμος necklace (see hormogone n.) + scientific Latin -ia -ia suffix1; so called because the seeds of the plant are used as beads for necklaces).
Either of two North and West African hardwood trees of the genus Pericopsis (formerly Afrormosia) (family Fabaceae ( Leguminosae)), P. elata and P. laxiflora, valued for their durable, heavy, fine-textured timber. Also: the timber itself, used esp. for furniture and flooring, and formerly for shipbuilding.

1956 Archit. Rev. 120 126/1 The furniture and joinery are of afrormosia (a wood very similar to teak in colour and quality).
1989 New Scientist 23 Sept. 56/1 Afrormosia, Pericopsis elata, is one of the world's most valuable hardwoods. It is a good example of a tropical tree that is mined as a resource with little thought for its conservation.
2007 Guardian (Nexis) 22 Sept. (Weekend Suppl.) 34 Here, they discover for the first time how much their afrormosia wood is worth in Europe.
