Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: classical Latin celticus , -an suffix.
Etymology: < classical Latin celticus Celtic adj. + -an suffix, in later use after the name of Gallia Celtica, a large subdivision of Gaul, literally ‘Celtic Gaul’ (see the discussion at Celtic adj.). Compare earlier Celtic adj.In quot. 1607, Celtican spoils is after classical Latin spolia Celtica in a passage from Pliny paraphrased by the author.
Now rare (chiefly historical).

Of or relating to the Celts; spec. of or relating to the inhabitants of central Gaul (Gallia Celtica) (see Celt n.1 1a); (also occasionally) designating or relating to an ancient language or dialect formerly postulated as having been spoken by the inhabitants of this area (see sense B.).
