baardman S. Afr. (ˈbɑːdmən, ‖ ˈbaːrtman) Also (occas.) ˈbaardmannetjie (-mænətʃɪ, ‖ -manəci). [Afrikaans, f. baard beard + man man.] Name given to various fishes with barbels on the lips, and/or chin, as the sea-fish Sciæna capensis, related to and very like the Mediterranean umbra, or the fresh-water fish Barbus capensis.
