L. ōrātōrium, oratory n.1 In the extant sense 1, named from the musical services held in the church of the Oratory of St. Philip Neri in Rome in the latter half of the 16th century; these being virtually examples of the older Mystery Play improved and adapted to a religious service: see Grove Dict. Mus. s.v. Cf. F. oratorio (1739 in Hatz.-Darm.).
