Idzhevan

Idzhevan

 

a city (a settlement until 1961) in the Armenian SSR. It is located in the valley of the Agstev River, a tributary of the Kura, on the Yerevan-Tbilisi highway. Idzhevan is 41 km southwest of Akstafa station on the Tbilisi-Baku railroad line and 78 km northeast of the city of Kirovakan. Population, 14,000 (1970). There are carpet, wood-products, and bentonite combines in the city, as well as a brewery, a cheese-processing plant, and a timber procurement establishment. Construction materials and machines for the timber industry are also produced in Idzhevan. There is a technicum of industrial technology. Cultural facilities include a museum of the establishment of Soviet power in Armenia, a people’s theater, and a puppet theater.
