carlinecarlingn.1

Brit. /ˈkɑːlʌɪn/, /ˈkɑːlɪn/, U.S. /ˈkɑrˌlaɪn/, Scottish English /ˈkarlɪn/ Brit. /ˈkɑːlɪŋ/, U.S. /ˈkɑrlɪŋ/, Scottish English /ˈkarlɪŋ/
Forms: Middle English kerling, kerlyng, 1500s carlyng, 1500s–1800s carling, carlin, carline.
Origin: A borrowing from early Scandinavian.
Etymology: Northern Middle English kerling , < Old Norse kerling woman, especially old woman, feminine of karl (with umlaut and -ing , Norse form of -in , -en suffix2). Carlin is assimilated to carl n.1, and in the ending follows the Scots pronunciation of -ing suffix1 as -in, as in mornin', flittin', etc. In Scots commonly /ˈkɛrlin/.
Chiefly Scottish.

Compounds

carline's pet n. Scottish Obsolete used as a term of abuse for a person in satirical poetry and flytings in 16th-cent. Scotland (see quots.).The meaning of pet is uncertain. Editors of Dunbar have usually taken carlingis pet (in quot. ?a1513) to mean either ‘old woman's fart’ (cf. pet n.1, esp. quot. a1625) or ‘old woman's favourite’ (cf. pet n.2 2). Later quots. apparently allude to Dunbar's use.

carlinen.2

Brit. /ˈkɑːlʌɪn/, /ˈkɑːlɪn/, U.S. /ˈkɑrˌlaɪn/
Etymology: < French carline, Spanish carlina, Italian carlina, and medieval Latin carlina, reputed to be for Carolina, from the emperor Karl or Carolus Magnus (Charlemagne)—‘Herba quam Carolinam vocant, quod Magno quondam Carolo divinitus ostensa fuerit, adversus pestiferam luem salutaris’ (Ruelle c1525 in Du Cange).
A genus of Composite plants, closely allied to the thistles, and hence generally called Carline Thistle. The common species ( Carlina vulgaris) grows on dry soil, and is conspicuous for the straw-coloured, hygrometric involucre which surrounds the dull purple disk of the flower.
