Now historical and rare.
The blessed (or holy) thistle, Centaurea benedicta (family Asteraceae), an annual plant native to the Mediterranean region which has spiny leaves and a head of yellow florets. Also: the leaves and flowering stalks of this plant, or a preparation of these, used as a restorative medicinal agent.Now chiefly with reference to Shakespeare's use (see quot. 1600).
