Primary stress is usually attracted to this suffix, but (especially in U.S.) can sometimes also be found on the usual stressed syllable of the preceding element; see e.g.

Etymology: < French -aire -ary suffix1.Apparently attested earliest in the second half of the 19th cent. in billionaire n., which is modelled on the French loan millionaire n. Subsequently in a small number of (frequently humorous) formations denoting wealthy people, chiefly modelled on these words (e.g. bazillionaire n., gazillionaire n., milliardaire n., pillionaire n., pyramidaire n.).
