Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Italian. Partly a borrowing from Spanish. Etymons: Italian basta; Spanish basta.
Etymology: Partly < Italian basta (early 16th cent.), and partly < Spanish basta (early 15th cent.), uses as interjection of the 3rd person singular present of Italian bastare and Spanish bastar to suffice (for both, see bastant adj.).Compare Middle French, French baste (1534; < Italian).
Chiefly in Italian- or Spanish-speaking contexts.
‘That's enough!’ ‘No more!’Not fully naturalized in English.
