Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymons: French bastant, baster.
Etymology: < Middle French bastant (end of the 15th cent.), use as adjective of present participle of baster to suffice (1270 in Old French) < Italian bastare to suffice (compare Spanish bastar , in the same sense; both 13th cent.), of uncertain origin; perhaps < an unattested post-classical Latin form *bastare to carry < ancient Greek βαστάζειν to carry, of unknown origin. Compare basta int.Compare Spanish bastante (13th cent.), Italian bastante (15th cent.).
Chiefly Scottish. Obsolete.
Sufficient; able, capable.
