Etymology: < Middle French bastant (end of the 15th cent.), use as adjective of present participle of baster to suffice (1270 in Old French) < Italian bastare to suffice (compare Spanish bastar , in the same sense; both 13th cent.), of uncertain origin; perhaps < an unattested post-classical Latin form *bastare to carry < ancient Greek βαστάζειν to carry, of unknown origin.
