单词 camogie
释义

camogien.

Brit. /kəˈməʊɡi/, U.S. /kəˈmoʊɡi/, Irish English /kəˈmoʊɡi/
Forms: 1900s– camogee, 1900s– camogie.
Origin: A borrowing from Irish. Etymons: Irish camógaíocht, camóguidheacht, camógaidheacht.
Etymology: < Irish camógaíocht, †camóguidheacht, †camógaidheacht (1904 or earlier; < camóg camogie stick (see note) + -idheacht, suffix forming abstract nouns from verbs, after camánaíocht, †camánaidheacht hurling), with remodelling of the ending after -ie, variant of -y suffix6. Compare (with a related suffix) Irish camánacht hurling, Scottish Gaelic camanachd shinty. The coinage of the Irish name of the game is attributed to Tadhg Ó Donnchadha (Tadhg O'Donoghue), Irish-language writer and scholar, and prominent member of the Gaelic Athletic Association. The rules of the game are said to have been written in 1903; quot. 1904 is taken from a report on the first match. Irish camóg stick with a crook, camogie stick (Early Irish cammóc shepherd's crook) is < Early Irish camm crooked (see cam adj.) + -óc , suffix forming diminutives (see -ock suffix); perhaps compare cammock n.2 In this context it is apparently used as a diminutive of camán caman n., on account of a camogie stick being shorter than a hurling stick. Irish camánaíocht is one of several names for hurling (the men's game); the official name is now iomáint.
Esp. in Ireland: a game similar to hurling, played by women and girls.
