Etymology: < post-classical Latin mediastinum mediastinum n. or scientific Latin mediastinus, adjective (see quot. 18261 at sense 1) + -al suffix1. Compare French médiastinal (1843 or earlier) and mediastine n.1
1. Entomology. Of or relating to the area of the costa and subcosta of an insect's wing; spec. designating the subcostal vein.
