Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Italian. Partly a borrowing from Spanish. Etymons: Italian capitana; Spanish capitana.
Etymology: Partly < Italian capitana flagship (15th cent.; earlier in sense ‘female leader’ (13th cent. as capetana , with reference e.g. to Venus and the Virgin Mary), feminine form corresponding to capitano captain n.), and partly < the similarly formed Spanish capitana flagship (second half of the 15th cent.; compare also nao capitana , barca capitana , recorded at a similar date); earlier in sense ‘female leader’ (first half of the 15th cent.)). Compare Portuguese capitânia flagship (15th cent.). Compare earlier admiral n. 3.
Chiefly in Italian and Spanish contexts: the ship of an admiral or commander; the flagship of a fleet or armada.
