Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Urdu. Partly a borrowing from Persian. Etymons: Urdu żilaʿ; Persian żilaʿ.
Etymology: < (i) Urdu żilaʿ part, district, division, and its etymon (ii) Indian Persian żilaʿ, in the same senses, specific use of Persian żilaʿ rib, side < Arabic ḍilaʿ rib, (in extended use) side of a triangle. Compare slightly earlier zilladar n.
In South Asia, esp. India and Bangladesh: an administrative district forming a subdivision of a province, state, or division.
