Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: pedi- comb. form, Latin rēmus.
Etymology: < pedi- comb. form + classical Latin rēmus oar (see reme n.1) (see quot. 1835). Compare earlier remipede n., and later scientific Latin Pediremi (1843), former name of a superfamily of water bugs. N.E.D. (1904) gives the pronunciation as (pe·dirīm) /ˈpɛdɪriːm/.
Zoology. Obsolete. rare.
W. Kirby's term for: an aquatic insect or crustacean whose limbs are expanded at the ends to form paddles for swimming (rather than being branched or hair-fringed); a remipede.

1835 W. Kirby On Power of God in Creation of Animals II. xvii. 133 They may be divided into three distinct kinds. 1. Jointed legs dilated towards their extremities, as in the common whirl-wig [beetle]..and in the tribe of crabs termed swimmers, these I would call Pediremes.
