Origin: Formed within English, by clipping or shortening. Etymon: pedipalpus n.
Etymology: < pedipalpus n., with omission of the ending. In sense 2 after French pédipalpes (Latreille Genera Crustaceorum et Insectorum (1806) I. 128). Compare later palp n. and clavipalp n.
Zoology.
1. Each of the second pair of appendages attached to the cephalothorax of most chelicerate arthropods, variously specialized e.g. as pincers in scorpions, as sensory and copulatory organs in spiders, and as locomotory organs in horseshoe crabs.
