Etymology: < (i) Anglo-Norman administrator, Anglo-Norman and Middle French administratour (superseding earlier administrour administerer n.; French administrateur ) executor (late 13th cent. or earlier in Anglo-Norman), person in charge of the affairs of others (1290 in Old French; especially those of a community (c1350) or of a minor (1404)), person who dispenses justice (a1430), person responsible for a particular task (a1498), and its etymon (ii) classical Latin administrātor person who has charge of (an operation), director, manager, in post-classical Latin also person appointed to administer the estate of a deceased person or a minor (from 13th cent. in British sources), person who manages the affairs of a monastery or convent (16th cent. in British (Scottish) and continental sources), person who dispenses a sacrament (1560 in the passage translated in quot. 1563 at sense 3b) < administrāt- , past participial stem of administrāre administer v. + -or -or suffix.
