Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: winter n.1, dike n.1
Etymology: < winter n.1 + dike n.1In sense 1 with reference to the practice of hanging out laundry on walls or hedges (compare dike n.1 6) to dry, air, and bleach in the sun during the summer months. In sense 2 after German Winterdeich (second half of the 18th cent. or earlier) and its model Dutch winterdijk (15th cent. in Middle Dutch). With this sense compare also UUynterdyke (1662 in an account of a document of 1438), the name of a former embankment on fenland near Crowland Abbey, Lincolnshire.
1. Scottish and English regional (northern). A hinged upright frame on which clothes are hung to air or dry indoors; a clothes horse. Chiefly in plural. Cf. winter hedge n.
