Origin: A borrowing from Danish. Etymon: Danish alvit.

Etymology: < Danish alvit (D. Forbes & T. Dahll 1854, in Nyt Magazin for Naturvidenskaberne 8 217) < the name of Alve , a locality in the Arendal district of southern Norway, where the mineral was first discovered + -it -ite suffix¹. Compare French alvite (1856).Compare earlier (unrelated) alvite , erroneous form of albite n. (see discussion at that entry).

Mineralogy.

A reddish-brown amorphous mineral found in pegmatites which is an altered or metamict variety of zircon, with elevated concentrations of hafnium, rare earths, and radioactive elements.
