Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin alvinus.

Etymology: < post-classical Latin alvinus (1608 in fluxus alvinus , or earlier) < classical Latin alvus belly ( < the same Indo-European base as ancient Greek αὐλός ) + -īnus -ine suffix¹.It is possible that classical Latin alvīnus should be read at Pliny Nat. Hist. 21. 172, in alvīnīs (dative plural), denoting disorders of the stomach, but modern editions read alvi vitiis ‘evils of the belly’ in this passage. With alvine dejection (see quot. 1740) compare post-classical Latin deiectio alvina (1658 or earlier).

Medicine. Now rare and chiefly historical.

Designating an excretion from the intestines or (rarely) other organ of the belly. Also: designating the intestinal tract; of or relating to the intestinal tract.
