Etymology: < white adj. + tawer n.1Attested earliest in surnames; compare quots. a1200, 1224-46, 1279, 1311. Compare also Huettawiereslane (a1200), a lost street name (of unknown location) in the City of London. Compare post-classical Latin whittawyarius (1284 in a British source; < English), and also Middle Dutch witgaerwer, Middle High German wīzgerwer (German Weißgerber).
