Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin quīnquennālis.
Etymology: < classical Latin quīnquennālis occurring every five years, lasting five years < quīnque- quinque- comb. form + annus year (see annals n.) + -ālis -al suffix1. Compare Middle French, French quinquennal , adjective (1520). With use as adjective compare earlier quinquennial adj.Later occurrences of quinquennal probably show typographical errors for quinquennial adj., rather than later examples of sense B.:1890 Daily News (Frederick, Maryland) 2 June The Quinquennal Convention of the Constitution Grand Lodge..began in Richmond.1956 Times 5 Apr. 15/4 The quinquennal valuation..has revealed a very satisfactory position indeed.
