| 释义 | quinquefoiln.adj.Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin quīnquefolium.Etymology: < classical Latin quīnquefolium cinquefoil (the plant), in post-classical Latin also ornamental design resembling this leaf (1245 in a British source), use as noun of neuter of quīnquefolius having five leaves < quīnque- quinque- comb. form + folium leaf (see foil n.1).With the β. , γ. , and δ. forms compare forms at cinquefoil n. and adj.; the word probably partly shows remodelling of cinquefoil n. and adj. after classical Latin quīnquefolium. Compare also Anglo-Norman quintefoil (c1300 or earlier), quintofoil (14th cent. or earlier), quintefoile (early 15th cent. or earlier; also quintefoille ), quintfoil (1500 or earlier). Earlier currency of the γ. forms may be shown by occurrences as a vernacular word in Latin or multilingual medical recipes (see e.g. the gloss pentafilon .i. quintefoil, c1300 in T. Hunt Popular Medicine in Thirteenth-century England (1990) 225), but these could alternatively be taken as showing the Anglo-Norman word. Now rare .
