Etymology: < water n. + garden n.The meaning in the following isolated earlier attestation, from an inventory of an ironmonger, is unclear:1601 in E. R. Brinkworth & J. S. W. Gibson Banbury Wills & Inventories (1976) I. 163 2 water-gardens, 1s. 4d.
A garden in which water features prominently, or forms the principal medium in which plants are grown. Also (occasionally): a water-filled container in which aquatic plants are cultivated.
