Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Latin. Or (ii) a borrowing from Italian. Etymons: Latin citrinella; Italian citrinella.
Etymology: < (i) post-classical Latin citrinella (1555 or earlier denoting the citril finch; also in scientific Latin as specific name of the yellowhammer (1758) and of the citril finch (1764)), or its apparent etymon (ii) Italian regional (northern, e.g. Trentino) citrinella citril finch (apparently 16th cent., although not recorded in dictionaries of Italian), apparently < citrino citrine adj. + -ella -ella suffix, with reference to the bird's yellow head. Compare German Citrinlein citril finch (16th cent.). Compare later citril n.
Obsolete. rare.
The citril finch, Carduelis citrinella; = citril n.In quot. 1828: poetic for the yellowhammer, Emberiza citrinella, which the author also calls ‘the citrinella’.
