Origin: A word inherited from Germanic.
Etymology: Cognate with or formed similarly to Old Saxon waldand ruler, lord (often with reference to God), Old High German waltanti master (over others), Old Icelandic valdandi ruler, Gothic -waldands (in gardawaldands master of the household) < the Germanic base of wield v. + the Germanic base of -end suffix1. Compare the Old English agent noun formations in -wealda and the Germanic parallels discussed at alwaldend n.Frequently used in poetry. With religious uses compare alwaldend n. and the discussion at that entry. Early Middle English forms are often influenced by forms of wield v. (compare especially forms such as weldende with Forms 1δ. at that entry).
Obsolete.
A ruler, a lord, a master. Chiefly with reference to God. Cf. wielder n. 3.In quot. eOE in figurative context, with reference to possessors being mastered by their possessions.
