Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: Vulcan n., -ization suffix.
Etymology: < Vulcan n. + -ization suffix. Compare vulcanize v. and slightly earlier vulcanized adj.The word was suggested to Thomas Hancock (1786–1865) by William Brockedon (1787–1854), English painter and inventor, who obtained patents for various applications of India rubber from 1825 onwards. Compare:1857 T. Hancock Pers. Narr. India Rubber Manuf. 107 It appeared desirable to give the material a more definite name..; and whilst discussing the subject amongst my friends, Mr. Brockedon proposed the term ‘Vulcanization’.Hancock himself established an India rubber business, and went into partnership with Charles Macintosh (compare mackintosh n.).
A process for making rubber or similar polymers harder and more durable by treatment with sulphur or sulphur compounds (typically accompanied by heat); the hardening or toughening produced by this process. Also in extended use and figurative.The change in properties results from increased cross-linkage of polymer chains by means of sulphur atoms.
