Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Vega.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin Vega (1545 or earlier in Alphonsine Tables) < Arabic wāqiʿ descending, coming down (in al-nasr al-wāqiʿ ‘the vulture coming down (to land)’), name of the constellation Lyra. The star is so called because the constellation which it forms part of was represented as a vulture in ancient Egypt, and as an eagle or vulture in ancient India. Compare French Wéga, (now usually) Véga (1740 or earlier as Wega).
Astronomy.
The star α Lyrae, a brilliant blue-white star which is the brightest in the constellation Lyra and the fifth brightest in the sky.Vega is one of the three bright stars (along with Altair and Deneb) that form the northern hemisphere's ‘Summer Triangle’.

Etymology: < Spanish vega (12th cent.), related to Catalan vega (14th cent.), Portuguese veiga (13th cent.), probably reflecting a word from a pre-Romance language of the Iberian peninsula.
