Etymology: < German Pepton (C. G. Lehmann 1849, in Berichte der Sächsischen Ges. f. Wissensch.: Math.-Phys. Klasse 1 12) < ancient Greek πεπτός cooked (see peptic adj.) + German -on -one suffix. Compare French peptone (1858).

Biochemistry. A mixture of proteins made soluble by partial digestion or hydrolysis, now widely used in microbiological culture media. Also: any soluble protein in such a mixture.
