单词 unto
释义

untoprep.conj.

Brit. /ˈʌntʊ/, /ˈʌntuː/, /ˈʌntə/, U.S. /ˈəntə/, /ˈəntʊ/
Forms: α. Middle English– unto (Middle English untoo), Middle English–1600s vnto (Middle English northern vntew), Middle English, 1500s Scottish wnto. β. Middle English–1500s, 1600s Scottish, 1800s dialect onto (Middle English onne-to, Scottish one-to).
Etymology: formed on the analogy of until prep., by substitution of to prep. in place of the northern equivalent til till prep. Compare the independent Old Saxon untō.Since the end of the 17th cent. less frequent, and employed chiefly in poetry, or in formal, dignified, or archaic style, or after Biblical use. Very rare in standard writers of the 18th cent., and hence noted by Johnson as ‘now obsolete’.
