Etymology: < Middle French substantieux, substancieux (French †substancieux ) nourishing (1279 in Old French), important, substantial (c1430) < substance substance n. + -ieux -ious suffix. Compare post-classical Latin substantiosus (1556 or earlier; rare), Old Occitan substancios (14th cent.), Catalan substanciós (2nd half of the 15th cent.), Spanish sustancioso (a1485 as substancioso ), Portuguese substancioso (1619), Italian sostanzioso (14th cent. as sustanzioso ). Compare earlier substantial adj.
Chiefly Scottish. Now rare.
