Etymology: < medieval Latin turchemannus, French trucheman (Cotgrave 1611), truchement = Italian turcimanno , Spanish trujaman , < Arabic turjamān (also tarjumān , tarjamān ), interpreter, the same word which through Greek and medieval Latin appears as dragoman n. The Arabic letter jim which is now generally j was originally g , like Hebrew gimel , the early form of the word being targumān , < targama to translate: compare Targum n.
